Omega 3 Products Can Help Us Lower Risks Of Gum Disease

Specialists do not stop reminding us that eating a healthy and balanced diet is very important for maintaining good dental health. In particular, according to a new research carried out by a group of the experts of Harvard Medical School, Boston, it is essential to provide your body with sufficient amounts of Omega 3 fatty acid which mainly can be found in oily fish like tuna, salmon, cod, herring, etc., as well as in other natural sources (walnuts, flaxseeds and so on). The researchers have found scientific evidence of the fact that regular consumption of Omega 3 fatty acids is closely linked to lower risks of gum disease or periodontitis (bacterial inflammation at the gum line).

lower risks of gum diseaseThe scientists leaded by Dr. Kenneth J. Mukamal reviewed diet habits and studied medical histories of more that 9,000 participants of the previous experiments and researches by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. About 8 per cent of those had gum disease, and those of the other participants who reported high consumption of omega-3 rich products had almost 22 per cent less chances of developing gum disease.

Dr. K. J. Mukamal comments on the study as the following. “The bacteria involved seem to need inflammation to grow. Indeed, anti-inflammatory treatment with omega-3’s seems to help experimental periodontitis in rabbits. Our hope was to extend that to humans.” The scientist also underlines that further studies and experiments are necessary to find out in what exact ways omega 3 fatty acids can protect us against gum disease and inflammations, and whether the effects of these natural compound should be associated only with fish oil or not.

It is a known fact that Omega 3 fatty acids have a vast variety of health benefits and therapeutic effects on many body systems. This natural product is an excellent natural solution which can protect us against stroke and heart attack, reduce our chances of having cancer, assist in weight loss and improve our brain function. To enjoy all these benefits, specialists suggest eating 2-3 portions of oily fish every week. The property to lower risks of gum disease now can find its place among these advantages of regular oily fish consumption.
